Sports Betting Applicant List Grows In Ohio

Ohio gaming officials have updated the list of sports wagering operators seeking approval to accept bets in the state.

Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, signed sports betting into law late last year. The Ohio Casino Control Commission then set Jan. 1, 2023, as the date when all licensed sports betting operators can begin accepting wagers at the same time.

Until then, sports betting in Ohio cannot take place legally.

Once legal sports betting begins, it will occur at land-based sites across the state and on mobile apps. Sports wagering also will be available at betting kiosks in bars and restaurants with liquor permits.

Though sports betting won’t be legal at the start of football season next month, as some had hoped, it will begin in time for major events like college bowl games and for Super Bowl.

This season’s Super Bowl is Feb. 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Deadlines Set

Mobile and land-based sports betting operators that applied by July 15 can begin accepting bets on the Jan. 1 universal start date, if approved.

The list of these applicants includes some whose paperwork arrived at the commission office in Columbus after July 15. However, applications postmarked by that date were accepted. Those that come in after July 15, or weren’t postmarked by then, still can operate in Ohio but won’t be guaranteed to start on Jan. 1, 2023.

Ohio bars and restaurants wanting a sports betting kiosk in their establishment on Jan. 1, 2023, have until Aug. 15 to submit applications.
